RAEV Awards 2023: Recognizing Safety in Land Transportation

Last May 8, the 4th Safest Fleet in Chile Award ceremony was held, organized by MIGTRA and CONASET. This recognition highlighted the truck fleets that reduced the risks associated with speeding on highways.

During 2023, companies from all over Chile competed for the prestigious RAEV Award, given for the fourth consecutive year with great attendance and success. This award recognizes truck fleets that reduced the risks associated with speeding, certifying that they do so in compliance with current regulations and thus promoting safer travel on the country's highways. With more than 170 transport fleets and more than 4,600 vehicles evaluated, the award has reached a new participation record this year. The RAEV (Accident Risk from Speeding) platform, created by MIGTRA, is one of its most relevant developments and uses sophisticated algorithms to evaluate the risk of speeding accidents generated by each driver and vehicle during a given period of operation. The economic activities to which the fleets using the RAEV platform belong are very diverse and range from mining products to fish or live animals, including fuels, bottles, food, chemical products and wood, among many others of great importance for the development of our country. In these companies, the tool has demonstrated a reduction of up to 70% in the possibility of accidents generated by own or third-party fleets, thus contributing to highway safety.

According to Pedro Garcia, CEO of MIGTRA, the objective is "to recognize the daily effort made by the thousands of drivers, safety officers, supervisors and fleet managers behind the land transportation operations with the lowest risk levels." At the event, Luz Renata Infante, Executive Secretary of Conaset, also participated, who highlighted that the fleets participating in this edition of the RAEV Award have reduced their risk by an average of 8% compared to the previous year: "the good road behavior of fleets has a multiplier effect. If you are on the highway and you see one of the trucks from these companies that does not exceed the speed limit, a change within the group begins to happen."

The event has gained national relevance and this was evident with the participation of authorities such as Alberto Escobar Poblete, Director of Mobility and Public Policy at the Automobile Club of Chile and the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Juan Carlos Munoz, who, through a video, highlighted that the initiative "is completely aligned with the objectives we have as a Ministry; that is, to reduce the number of accidents, injuries and fatalities on our roads. And the reason for this alignment is because we are celebrating an event that recognizes those companies and transporters that have presented the lowest risk indicators, especially thanks to respect for the maximum speed on each of their routes."

The winners

This year, in the Mining Principal category, the land transportation operation of lithium salts and solutions between extraction sites, plants and SQM ports won. The award was obtained with a safety record: it achieved a RAEV of just 1.8 units per 100 km, an impressive achievement considering that the operation works with more than 600 different trucks and 1,200 drivers.

First place in the Non-Mining Principal category went to the company ENEX, which participated with more than 500 trucks transporting fuels, lubricants and other company products, which together covered over 30 million kilometers during 2023.

A special mention went to the company Albemarle, which participating for the first time achieved the greatest efficiency in implementing the RAEV risk management system.

In the Mining Transporter category, Chile's Safest Fleets were: 1st place, Grupo Mining, 2nd place, Transportes Train, 3rd place Agretoc. Recognitions as safe companies were received by Transportes Pascual Pizarro, Transportes Nazar and Coseducam.

In the Non-Mining Transporter category, First place went to Transportes Zenon Macias, Second to Grupo TAD and Third to IXXOS. Be on Time, Casablanca, Grupo TAD, Jorquera, PyJ, TGH and Reinoso received recognitions as Safe Companies.

In the Safest Driver in Chile category, 1st place went to Manuel Barraza from Transportes Pascual Pizarro, 2nd prize was won by Gervasio Huiza from Grupo Mining and 3rd place went to Raul Olivares from Grupo Mining, and in the Safe Driver category, the winners were: Fernando Jorquera from Flota Nazar, Wilder Gonzalez from Grupo Mining, Luis Jelvez from Flota Nazar, Felipe Viza from Agretoc and Juan Rojas from Flota Coseducam.

At MIGTRA, we know that land transportation is a fundamental part of the economy in Chile. However, it also carries risks, especially when it comes to speeding on highways. That is why initiatives like the RAEV Awards are vital to recognize and promote safety in this area. This award not only recognizes the effort and dedication of these companies, but also promotes the importance of road safety in land transportation. We thank all participating companies and authorities who attended the event, for their commitment to safety and excellence in transportation. Let's continue working together to make Chile's highways a safer place for everyone.
