Migtra Bets on Technology to Make the Perfect Match Between Road Safety and Productivity

A high rate of vehicular accidents has a negative impact on different aspects of a company's work, such as causing delays and particularly affecting worker morale. But new technologies like AI are helping to change this and this national company seeks to lead that effort.

Speeding is among the leading causes of truck accidents. Going no further, it is responsible for no less than 60% of fatalities in these cases, according to figures from the National Traffic Safety Commission (CONASET) for 2022.

And what does this year hold for us? Although we do not yet have the consolidated national figures, we can say that there are companies linked to the mining, logistics and production world that have notably reduced this figure thanks to the use of tools -- with AI and Machine learning -- that allow understanding driver behavior and their weakest areas.

This information, when well interpreted and used, helps prevent possible errors that end in a risk situation and change behaviors that lead to accidents. In fact, with the use of solutions like those developed by the Chilean company Migtra -- with presence in Peru and Colombia -- the risk of speeding accidents can be reduced by up to 73% and annual savings of $US 18 million per year through the simplification of transportation system management.

Fewer accidents, better performance

It is no coincidence that the safest transportation systems are also the most productive. The interrelation between both variables is very close and both form a virtuous circle.

As Pedro Garcia, CEO of Migtra highlights, "productivity and safety go hand in hand. Let's think about productivity in a transportation system: if drivers have to wait a long time, more trucks and drivers will be needed, and this means a very large level of inefficiency. If vehicles spend more time within the site, they generate congestion, resource demand and risk. What we do, for the benefit of everyone, is find out where there are problems. We know what is happening every minute in these transportation systems and we can see that there are problems at a certain loading point, and we use that information to prevent possible impacts."

He also adds that better management reduces the risks of accidents and delays, as well as losses in contract compliance. And he concludes: "We have artificial intelligence models that identify the behavior of each driver and each truck, routes and loads and even with a few minutes' difference the time a vehicle will arrive." He asserts that this positively impacts the management of loading and unloading spaces and decision-making.
