Highway Accidents: How to Face and Reduce These Risks

According to the National Road Safety Observatory of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Peru, in 2022, 3,328 deaths from road accidents were recorded and during the first half of 2023, 1,474 people died in highway accidents.

While traffic accidents are fortuitous events, a large portion of these road incidents are caused by human factors and, to a lesser extent, by mechanical failures or problems on the roads.

A highway transportation company faces a series of risks that can affect its operations and its long-term viability. It is important to identify and manage these risks effectively to ensure driver safety, cargo integrity and business continuity.

Traffic accidents represent a significant risk for highway transportation companies. They can result in property damage, injuries to drivers and third parties, and significant repair and insurance costs.

Speeding: This infraction not only causes fines, but also represents a danger for the driver, their companions and other drivers and pedestrians on the road. There is no valid excuse for exceeding the speed limit.

Using a cell phone: Nowadays everyone is practically online and checking their phones, so when driving a vehicle we are not 100% focused. It is vitally important that a driver has all their senses on their task and is not distracted by calls or text messages, WhatsApp, or watching social media videos, since a large number of accidents are caused by cell phone use while driving.

Distractions: There are endless distractors, but in addition to talking on the phone, eating, programming the GPS, or constantly changing the volume or frequency of the radio are other distractions that can cause a traffic accident.

Drowsiness: When driving for many consecutive hours, or driving at night, fatigue can cause reflexes and senses not to act the same way they would under normal circumstances, or simply falling asleep at the wheel.

Fatigue: Driver health issues, such as fatigue, can endanger road safety. Companies must ensure that drivers are in good health and comply with service hour limits.

The key: Prevention and Management

Prevention is the most accurate way to get ahead of a traffic accident and managing these risks proactively and effectively is essential for a highway transportation company to operate safely and profitably. This involves implementing safety policies, maintenance programs, driver training and adopting advanced technology to monitor and improve safety and efficiency in their operations.
